The Lion and the Gazelle

This is an African proverb I'm fond of:

Every morning in Africa, a gazelle wakes up.
It knows it must run faster than the fastest lion or it will be killed.
Every morning a lion wakes up.
It knows it must outrun the slowest gazelle or it will starve to death.
It doesn't matter if you are a lion or a gazelle.
When the sun comes up, you better start running.

If you're a gazelle, what are you doing to stay ahead of the lions? If you're a lion, what are you doing to catch up to the gazelle? And if you're neither, then you're not in the game at all and you're going to get run over.
